Sophie's Birthday Bash
I headed over to Derby with Amanda on Friday night, which gave us a chance to catch up a bit with Sophie, and give her her birthday present! I'd been wracking my brains for ages trying to think what to get her. I often saw little things that she might like, but it was hard to think of one big thing that she'd enjoy. So in the end I decided why buy her one big present when I could buy her 30 little ones!
That's what I did. She's now got 30 presents from me to open over 30 days, at random. So far she's had a pack of cards, a leopard, two DVDs, a water bomb, a face pack and a mug. The rest are in a big bag in her front room, waiting to be unwrapped. I hope she gets to the pound of chicken liver soon, it was already on the turn when I wrapped it.
On Saturday a crowd of us headed down in convoy from Derby to Birmingham. Just before we left, I undid my suitcase in the boot to make sure I'd packed something... and, er, kind of forgot to re-zip it.
The result on arrival at the car-park:

Oops. Minor tranny explosion in Central Birmingham. No fatalities. One tranny suffering minor injuries to pride. Ho hum.
The stuff was all quickly re-packed and we headed off to into Brum for lunch. The Bullring is now an excellent shopping centre, and I couldn't resist popping into the new Apple store there and, er, investing in some iPod socks. Expensive, for what they are, but they're so funky! Siobhan's a big Mac fan, and there was some comments on her blog recently about a possible correlation between apple owners and trannies. I'm not an Mac owner (I used to be, my first "proper" computer was a Classic II) but I gotta say there's something very tranny about dressing up your iPod in grey socks for a weekday and pink ones for the weekend!
I also invested in something nice for the inside of my iPod, Ben Folds's new album Songs for Silverman. God I love that guy!
After shopping it was time to get changed for the evening festivities. First off was a drink in a nearby bar, then on to the main event - a meal at one of the many excellent Chinese restaurants in Birmingham's Chinatown.
29 people came for the meal altogether. Of course, 30 would have been fitting, but that's still a lot of people sitting down for a birthday do! We filled four tables in the restaurant!
After eating it was on to Nightingales, the biggest and best gay club in Birmingham. Spread over three floors, with two dancefloors, a restaurant, a garden area and a lounge bar. We seemed to spend most of the night in the garden area, as it was decidedly muggy indoors. So muggy, in fact, that about 2 in the morning the heavens opened and we were treated to a huge thunderstorm.
About 3.30 we headed home. Thoroughly enjoyable night!
